Most Common Back Conditions

Living with back pain is devastating. Everyday activities like grocery shopping, walking the dog, or even sitting at a desk can become nearly impossible. Pain can significantly affect your mood and outlook.  At the Minimally Invasive Spine Institute we are committed to helping patients find relief, which means first helping to educate you on your condition and all available treatments options.

Before you choose to undergo surgery or begin a course of treatment for your back pain, you should take time to learn about your condition, symptoms and available treatment options. Here are some of the most common back conditions we see and treat:

Bulging Disc

A Bulging disc occurs when the nucleus of the soft intervertebral disc pushes outside of the outer edge, causing a bulge in the shape of the disc.

Herniated Disc

Similar to a bulging disc, a herniated disc occur when the nucleus of the intervertebral disc breaks outside of the outer layer, causing the disc material to migrate outside of it’s natural positions.

Degenerative Disc Disease

As we age, the elements that make up the spinal discs begin to naturally degenerate, losing a portion of their mass and causing compression and irritation to the surrounding nerves.

Put simply, stenosis is the narrowing of the spinal column. This can cause nerves and other spinal elements to become compressed, resulting in pain and other symptoms.

Sciatica is a general term used to describe any compression or irritation of the Sciatic Nerve.
